Celebrate Thomas Edison with a Festival of Light in Fort Myers

November 16th, 2010

Fort Myers celebrates inventor Tom Edison with an annual festivalWhat better way to celebrate American inventor Thomas Edison, the man associated with the discovery of electricity, than with a large festival dedicated to lights in southwest Florida?

That's exactly what visitors to Fort Myers can expect in February of 2011 when the 73rd Edison Festival of Lights rolls into town with events all through the month.

Towards the end of his life, Edison was a fixture in the Fort Myers community after buying property in the city in 1885, which was called the Seminole Lodge. It was the inventor's winter retreat and eventually joined Fort Myer's Civitan Club, which Edison considered an "honor" to be a part of.

The festival includes a variety of events such as a 5K fun run, a classic car show and a light parade that goes through downtown.

The parade is probably the most popular event and those interested in attending should be aware that it is a ticketed event. It is scheduled for Saturday, February 19 at 7 p.m. and a "Street Seat" ticket is $10. Children under 6 are free if they are held in their parent's lap, according to the event's website.

Sand sculpting festival a hit for both visitors and locals
This past weekend, people of all ages went to Fort Myers Beach and marveled at the magnificent forms that had been created just using the sand that has made the shoreline famous.

According to NewsPress.com, an estimated 20,000 people attended the 24th annual American Sand Sculpting Championship this past weekend, which brought people from all over the world to the beautiful beaches of Fort Myers.

Seventeen sculptors created some of their best work over three days on 20-by-20-foot plots, reports the news source. This year's winner was Brad Goll from Austin, Texas.

Goll created a sculpture called "Headache," where he crated an elderly man holding his head, with a droopy left eye and an open bottle of aspirin in front of him, reports the news source. This intricate sculpture gave Goll an automatic entrance to the world championships which will be held in Federal Way, Washington.

Michel Lepire of Quebec, Canada, won the Fort Myers Beach People's Choice Award for a sculpture entitled "The American Spirit."

“For me, this is the best beach because the sand is very fine and it’s white. It’s not rough on your knees,” Lepire, who won the 2003 world championship, told the news source . “You rarely have sand like this. It’s just marvelous.”
